Visit our new exhibitions
In the new exhibition Vitality – Artefacts made to improve life, you can see objects from the museum's collections that all have one thing in common: they are made to improve life. Across the world and throughout time, people have sought to live good lives. For this, practical, functional, magical, and beautiful tools are needed. Take a closer look at both archaeological items from Norway and ethnographic items from communities in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, South America, and Oceania.
In the exhibition Uqšuqtuuq – the collection after Roald Amundsen, you can learn more about the local population in Uqšuqtuuq, far north in Canada. This area has been inhabited for over a millennium. The Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen and his crew spent nearly two winters here during their Northwest Passage expedition. Soon after arrival in 1903, the expedition team and the local community established contact and developed friendships. When the team continued their expedition, they brought with them new friendships and knowledge, but also an extraordinary collection of items that they had traded with the locals. Today, this collection is an exceptional cultural legacy from this region.
