See artifacts from Polynesia, where people have kept the chaos of nature at bay through both caution and courage

The exhibition Collapse – Human Being in an Unpredictable World is about what can happen when nature defies human expectations. We try to control nature, but it can force us to see the world with new eyes.

Our latest exhibitions:

In the exhibition In Memory of the Children, you can get acquainted with a new, impactful archaeological discovery. In the fall of 2023, our archaeologists investigated traces of the past outside Fredrikstad. It was a great surprise when they unearthed over 40 round graves made of stones.

In the exhibition Uqšuqtuuq – the collection after Roald Amundsen, you can learn more about the local population in Uqšuqtuuq, far north in Canada. This area has been inhabited for over a millennium. The Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen and his crew spent nearly two winters here during their Northwest Passage expedition. Soon after arrival in 1903, the expedition team and the local community established contact and developed friendships. When the team continued their expedition, they brought with them new friendships and knowledge, but also an extraordinary collection of items that they had traded with the locals. Today, this collection is an exceptional cultural legacy from this region.
